Frequently Asked Questions about SI

Q Why are Skateparks International skate park obstacles made from steel?
A When SI first started we tried wood but found out right away that it does not hold up. Steel is the strongest material and will hold up the longest. Plastic and thinner gauge steel such as 12 or 14 gauge (we use heavy 3/16” thick structural steel for skate surfaces) will gouge and potentially deform over time due to heavy use and the trick pegs on bikes.

Q What are some other advantages of SI obstacles?
A • All copings and grind rails are made of stainless steel.
• All of our obstacles are fully sided with 14 gauge galvanized steel to prevent injuries and the potential for garbage or for people to be inside the obstacle.
No screws are used anywhere on the entire skate surfaces to help prevent injuries.
• Barriers are provided on all obstacle decks that are 3’ and above, when it does not interfere with the use of the obstacle.
• Our obstacles come in a wide selection of colors to match your park décor.
• Due to the durability of the obstacles, there is very little maintenance costs involved to keep the park in great shape.
Q Doesn’t steel get hot?
A Darker colors are what gets hot in the sun. With the wide color selection we have, we recommend lighter colors for the decks and transitions areas where there may be high amounts of sun and warmer climates. This is not any different than a playground that is mainly steel that kids play on every day in the summer.

Q Isn’t concrete the way to go for longevity of skate park obstacles?
A Not really. Concrete will chip away and gouge with the trick pegs of bikes. Freeze/thaw cycles will also cause some issues with the concrete obstacles. There can be quite a bit of maintenance needed for concrete skateparks and it can get very costly.

Q What are SI Mod Obstacles?
A Mod Obstacles are fully fabricated skate park obstacles that require almost no installation time in the field. The obstacles are shipped to the customer complete, painted and ready to go. All you have to do is take them off the flatbed truck with the proper equipment and set them on the concrete in the proper configuration. The obstacle gets anchored to the concrete, the final piece of siding is screwed on and you are ready to skate. Saves cost!

Q What is the advantage of Mod Obstacles?
A Mod Obstacles are modular in that you could move them around fairly easily into a new configuration to give your skate park a different look. The Mod Obstacle items typically do not go over 4’ tall, but offer a wide variety of rails, ramps and jumps to keep skaters of all ages and abilities challenged.

Q How long is your warranty?
A Our Warranty is 20 years on main structures, platforms, decks and railings due to structural failure. This is currently the longest warranty in the business for skateparks. We are confident our obstacles will stand up to the elements and the abuse they take over time from not only skaters, but also inliners and bikers, too.

Q Can your skate park obstacles be installed on asphalt?
A We do not suggest it. We recommend concrete as the base material for our skate park obstacles. Asphalt will get soft and hot in higher temperatures and you may run the risk of certain rails becoming unstable and pulling out of the asphalt. Asphalt also tends to get pockets for water to sit in over time.

Q Do you offer signage for the park?
A Yes. We have in-house capability to custom make a sign or signs for your park that help to lay out guidelines and rules for users of the park. This is key for liability issues associated with a skatepark. These signs can also be used to list out sponsors or key groups of people involved in helping to make the skate park a reality in your community.

Q Do you have designs for me to choose from?
A Of course. We have pre-designed Mod Obstacle skate parks you can pick from or we can design specifically to your budget and size requirements. We have the newest design software on the market and will be able to provide not only 2D layouts of your unique design, but we will also provide you color 3D renderings along with a CD showing you an animated view of your skate park. We can even provide you with an individual specification sheet for each obstacle you wish to purchase.
